The Case for a Proper Camp Table

Folding Camp Table Set

Most campsites get by with a cooler, a log and a lot of balancing. A proper table changes that. It gives every task a flat, stable place to happen, and it quietly makes the whole camp feel more like a home.

Why a table beats everything else

A table at true camp-chair height turns every meal from a balancing act into an actual dinner. It keeps food off the ground, gives the stove somewhere safe to sit and stops small things from getting lost in the grass.

A flat surface makes everything else in camp easier.

What to look for

  • A tabletop that stays flat on uneven ground, with adjustable legs if possible.
  • A heat-resistant surface that can take a hot pan.
  • A folded size that fits the boot of the car without a fight.
  • Enough room for two people to eat without elbowing each other.

Wood over aluminium, most of the time

A solid wood folding table is heavier, but it is quieter, warmer to the touch and simply looks right beside a canvas tent. Aluminium wins on weight, so choose by how far you carry it.

A table also becomes the natural heart of camp. Coffee in the morning, cards in the afternoon and dinner at dusk all happen around it, so it is worth choosing one you actually enjoy looking at as well as using.

Setting it up

  1. Choose the flattest patch near the tent door, away from the fire.
  2. Open the table fully and check that all legs lock before you load it.
  3. Level it with folded cloth or flat stones if the ground slopes.
  4. Keep a clear half for cooking and the other half for eating.

Good camps are built around a table, not a fire.

CampAtelier field notes

Set it up first, before the tent or the stove. Once there is a good table in the middle of camp, everything else seems to arrange itself around it.
